Fat transfer

can often be an excellent option for individuals who are interested in diminishing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, as well as for those seeking to enhance the volume and/or contour of particular areas of the face and body. Sometimes referred to as fat injections or fat grafting, this procedure involves the use of the patient’s own fat, which is typically harvested via liposuction from the abdomen, hips, thighs, or other regions of the body that have a sufficient amount of fatty tissue present. Unlike some injectables and volumizing fillers, no allergy testing is required prior to treatment, and results generally last many years.

Local anesthetic is used to help reduce or even eliminate any possible discomfort experienced during the treatment process. Once removed with liposuction – which provides the added benefit of body contouring in the specific donor region – harvested fat is then filtered, cleansed, and prepared for reinjection into targeted areas of the face/body using a sterilized syringe. Whether performed alone or in combination with another procedure, transferred fat can:

  • Smooth facial lines and wrinkles
  • Reduce the appearance of scarring or other signs of skin injury.
  • Enhance the volume and/or contour of the cheeks, lips, chin, and other facial features.
  • Improve the size and shape of the breasts via natural breast enhancement.
  • Rebuild the breasts after mastectomy.

Following fat transfer, minimal bruising and swelling may occur in the treatment area(s), but these symptoms typically subside relatively quickly. Most patients experience little to no pain after the procedure, though any potential discomfort can generally be managed effectively with over-the-counter medication. Ultimately, results achieved through fat grafting tend to be extremely natural looking and feeling, and in many instances, the effects are permanent.
